The Only Professional Workers Theatre in Finland

The TTT-Theatre is a professional theatre founded in 1901, the only professional workers theatre in the country. The core repertoire consists of Finnish drama, classics of world litterature, musicals and music theatre.

Four stages
The TTT-Theatre has been operating on the same site alongside Hämeenpuisto Park since 1905. From 1905 to 1985 the main stage was on the second floor of the building owned by the Workers Association of Tampere. The Cellar Theatre, commenced in 1965, is also located in the same building. The new theatre, designed by architects Marjatta and Martti Jaatinen, was built next to the old building. Its completion in 1985 provided the TTT-Theatre with a new main stage.

In the fall 2011 we opened the TTT-Club, a new theatre restaurant.

Today the TTT-Theatre shows plays on four different stages.

The Main Stage - Suuri näyttämö
The auditorium of Vanha päänäyttämö (the former main stage) seats 314 spectators, the Cellar Theatre 160 and the new main auditorium 736 spectators.

The Main Stage with it's over 700 seats serves large audiences. Therefore, its repertorie aims at being as versatile as possible without eschewing artistic challenge.

The repertoire presents Finnish plays, classics of the world litterature and a great variety of music theatre. On the music scene, musicals like the My Fair Lady, the operetta Victoria und Ihr Husar, the musicals Suruttomat, Marilyn and Vuonna 85 have attracted thousands of theatre-goers. It also is the stage for popular, contemporary finnish drama.

Old Main Stage - Vanha päänäyttämö
The former main stage has a repertoire of plays requiring a medium-sized theatre and adaptation to a 'peeping hole' space are ideal.

The repertoire consists mainly of comedy, stand up and finnish drama.

The Cellar Theatre - Kellariteatteri
The Cellar Theatre is the experiment laboratory of the TTT Theatre. It is the place for selective theatre-lovers and daredevils. Many finnish plays have had their first public performances there.

The new Cellar Theatre was opened to public fall 2006. The stage and also foyer were complitely renovated.

The TTT Club - TTT-Klubi
Our new theatre restaurant TTT Club has a fantastic twenties look. High quality theatre technique and revolving stage offer a place to make a large variety of perfomances.

The reportoire consists of music theatre, live bands, stan up and comedy.

10 Premieres in A Season
The TTT-Theatre stages on average 20 premieres per year. The number of performances is over 400 a year with a total attendance of nearly 200 000 people (2010-2011). The season opens in mid August and closes at the end of May.

The artistic personnel of the TTT-Theatre consist of the director of the theatre, stage directors, dramatist or literary advisors, costume designers, scene decorators and forty actors. Also, the theatre employs guest artist on regular basis.

A career in the TTT-Theatre is a desired one for finnish actors and actresses. We employ only the best. We have now 35 permanent actors and actresses and in adition quest actors and actresses are hired annually. Get to know our stars here.

The permanent staff totals about 130. With temporary employees included, the theatre employs nearly 300 persons annually.

Management
The TTT-Theatre has been a limited liability company since 1941. The theatre is owned by the Workers' Association of Tampere. The highest authority is vested in the General Meeting, which appoints the members of the Board. The main responsibility for artistic management lies with the director of the theatre, who is appointed for a specific period. The financial director is responsible for finances. The management team of the theatre also includes technical manager.

The artistic director is Mr Riku Suokas, who started in this position fall 2006.

History
The idea of founding the TTT-Theatre was first put forward by a cotton factory worker, August Lindroos, at the meeting of the entertainment committee of the Workers' Association of Tampere in March 1901. However the actual foundation date is considered to be 27 September 1901. The early years of the new theatre were unstable. The Workers' Association decided to take the theatre under its wings in 1905. The association laid down rules for the theatre and hired its new festival hall for the theatre to stage performances. The theatre started to evolve into a professional theatre in 1906 with the appointment of Tilda Vuori as the director of the theatre. Her directorship lasted until 1917 when the Civil War interrupted the theatre's activities for one and a half years.

His successor was Kosti Elo, who led the theatre from 1919 to 1940. During his directorship the number of actors and actresses was increased. The legendary TTT-Theatre spirit started to sproud. Kosti Elo's period finished at the outbreak of the war. During the war, from 1940 to 1943, the theatre was under the leadership of director Edwin Laine, who strove to create a 'people's theatre'.

From 1943 to 1964 the theatre was led by director Eino Salmelainen. He was amongst the most prominent directors and actors' trainers of his times. The period of 1964-1968, with director Eugen Terttula as the director of the theatre, witnessed the foundation of the Cellar Theatre in 1965.
In the years of citizens' social and political commitment 1968-1973 the theatre was directed by Kai Savola, who emphasized humanist values. His successor was actor Lasse Pöysti 1974-1981, who cherished contacts with Finnish playwrights and foreign theatres. Pöysti was succeeded by director Mikko Majanlahti, who held the post until 1986. It was during his period that the new building was completed in 1985.

In 1986 Taisto-Bertil Orsmaa was appointed the first theatre director to work in the new building. He held the post only for few months. The big building seemed to demand a new kind of management, so the team of directors was appointed for three years (1986-1988): namely general manager Simo Tavaste, professor and actor Veikko Sinisalo, conductor Juhani Raiskinen, actor Mauri Kuosmanen and dramatist and literary advisor Jorma Kairimo. From 1988 to 1990 Simo Tavaste carried the main responsibility for the management of the theatre.

The history of the TTT-Theatre is characterized by the periods of its influental theatre directors who have been either stage directors or actors. In 1990 the old mode of management was reintroduced: one theatre director, namely Jussi Helminen, was appointed to manage the theatre. After Helminen the director was Esko Roine and since 2006 Riku Suokas.
